Smart locks for hotels

A hotel corridor with room doors

Short answer. A hotel smart lock project is about staff workflow as much as hardware. Decide who needs access, how guests receive it, what happens when power fails, and how you will roll out room by room. Talk to your supplier early about volume and installation.

Why are hotels moving to smart locks?

Traditional keys get lost, copied and forgotten. Smart locks replace them with codes, cards or app access that can be cancelled without changing a barrel. That makes front-desk work simpler and rooms easier to turn around.

What questions should I ask before choosing?

A hotel has different needs from a home. Ask your supplier these questions before you commit.

  • How do staff get access to many rooms?
  • How are guest codes or cards issued and cancelled?
  • What happens at a power or battery failure?
  • How is the lock serviced and who responds?
  • Can the installer work room by room around guests?

Which access methods suit guests and staff?

Guests usually need a simple way in that works the first time: a PIN or a card. Staff need controlled access with the ability to remove it when someone leaves.

Meloc locks support PIN, card, fingerprint, app and key. The right mix depends on your property. Ask our team which family suits your doors.

How should I plan backup access?

A guest locked out at night is the worst outcome. Plan for it. Keep mechanical keys for each lock in a secure place at the property, check batteries on a routine schedule, and train night staff on the fallback.

All Meloc locks include a mechanical backup key.

How do I roll it out?

Do not change every door at once. Start small and learn.

  • Pilot on a floor or a handful of rooms
  • Write the staff routine and test it
  • Record battery and service dates per room
  • Extend room by room when the routine works

What about supply and service?

A rollout needs a supplier who can deliver in volume and service on site. Meloc supplies hotels and short-stay operators, with local teams in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Talk to the team early about larger orders.

How do I train staff?

A new lock changes daily routines at the front desk, in housekeeping and for night staff. Write one page per role and walk through it on a real door before go-live.

Cover the unhappy path too: a code that fails, a flat battery, a guest who cannot get in. Staff who have practised the fallback stay calm when it happens.

Keep the instructions short and in the language your staff use.

What about guest experience?

Guests judge a hotel in the first minute. A lock that opens first time feels modern. A lock that fails feels worse than the old key. Test the check-in journey end to end, from the message you send to the sound the lock makes.

Make sure the signage and instructions are clear in the languages your guests speak. A small card on the door with a phone number helps more than any technology.

Questions and answers

Can smart locks work on older hotel doors?

Often yes, but each door type needs checking. Your installer should check thickness, material and existing hardware before you order.

Do guests need an app?

Not necessarily. A PIN or card works without an app.
