Smart locks for short-stay rentals

Short answer. A smart lock lets a short-stay host hand over access without meeting every guest or posting keys. You choose a code or app invitation for each stay, and remove it afterwards. Plan for backup access and a clear check-in message so a guest is never stuck outside.

Why do short-stay hosts use smart locks?

Every key handover costs time. Someone has to be at the door, or a key has to sit in a lockbox, and lost keys mean a locksmith call. A smart lock replaces that with a code the guest enters.

It also changes what you do at the end of a stay. Instead of collecting a key, you remove the code. No copied key stays in circulation.

What does self check-in look like?

The guest receives the entry details before arrival, usually with the address and a short set of instructions. On the day, they enter a PIN or use an app invitation and walk in.

Keep the message simple. Include the door you are talking about, what the keypad looks like, and who to call if the code does not work.

  • Send the code or invitation before arrival
  • Say which door and how to wake the keypad
  • Give a phone number that is answered
  • Ask the guest to confirm they are inside

Which unlock methods suit guests?

For short stays, a PIN code is the most practical. It needs no app, no enrolment and no hardware handed over. Cards work for longer stays or staff. Fingerprints are better kept for you and your cleaners.

Meloc Lite is described for rental apartments and a first smart lock, with fingerprint, PIN, card and key. Pro and Prime also suit rental front doors where you want a more premium feel.

What if the battery runs flat or the code fails?

Plan for it before it happens. A lock that is flat at midnight with a guest outside is a bad night for everyone. Check the battery between stays and replace it on a schedule you set, not when it complains.

Keep a mechanical key in a safe place that is not at the property, for example with a trusted neighbour or a manager. All Meloc locks include a mechanical backup key, so you are never forced to break in.

Can I manage the lock from a distance?

Remote management means issuing and removing codes without being on site. Meloc locks work with Smart Life (Tuya) or TTLock, and some families connect to Wi-Fi through the Meloc Gateway, which is available in Georgia only.

If you run several apartments, decide early how you will keep track of which code belongs to which stay. A simple spreadsheet beats memory.

What should I tell guests about privacy?

Guests want to know who can enter. Be honest in your listing about the lock type and about who holds codes. Never leave a code active after a stay, and change the host code if a cleaner leaves your team.

How do I handle cleaners and maintenance?

Cleaners and maintenance staff need access between stays, often at set times. Give each person their own code or card where the lock allows it, so you know who entered and can remove one person without changing everything.

Avoid sharing one code between several people. If that code leaks or someone leaves, you have to reset it for everyone.

Keep a simple written routine for turnaround day: remove the last guest code, check the battery, test the lock, set the next code.

What should I check before listing the property?

Test the whole journey yourself. Stand outside with the message you plan to send and follow it exactly. If you get confused, so will a tired guest at night.

Also check the door itself. A smart lock does not fix a door that sticks or does not close fully. Fix that first, then fit the lock.

Questions and answers

Can guests use a smart lock without installing an app?

Yes. A PIN code is entered on the keypad and needs no app or enrolment.

How do I stop a former guest returning?

Delete their code after checkout. Do it as part of your turnaround routine so it does not depend on memory.

Is a smart lock suitable for rental apartments in Georgia, Azerbaijan or Uzbekistan?

Meloc sells and installs locks in all three countries. Lite is described for rental apartments and Slim suits glass and aluminium entrances.
